Ten years ago, Ersilia left her beloved Avellino to face new adventures and challenges in Australia. Seeking opportunities and a different life, she settled in the vast and diverse Australian continent. However, the Covid-19 pandemic made her journey even more arduous. Like many, Ersilia also had to confront the difficulties and uncertainty brought on by the global health crisis.
Once the Covid emergency was over and the borders reopened, Ersilia decided to return to Italy for a short time in early 2022, eager to reconnect with her roots. But when she returned to Australia, intent on wrapping up any remaining unfinished business and saying goodbye to the country that had welcomed her, she had a revelation.
Ersilia realized she was rereading the same "book" of her life, but with fresh eyes. She saw Australia in a different light, with a renewed awareness and appreciation for the opportunities it still had to offer. This new perspective led her to consider a further challenge: applying for a job at Rio Tinto's mines, located in the Western Australian desert. With determination, she sent in her resume, ready to begin a new chapter in one of the most extreme and challenging environments in the world.

From dreamer to fighter
But who was Ersilia as a child? Ersilia was a dreamer. "I was a princess," she recalls. "I loved love stories and everything about princesses and happy endings.". Life, however, has taken her far from her childhood dreams. Today, Ersilia wears sturdy boots, overalls, and her hair tied back as she faces the challenges of her job in the mine.
Despite the change of scenery, the inner strength she has developed has only made her more aware. Ersilia is a strong woman, from dreamy princess to desert warrior. Her transformation is a testament to power, courage, and resilience.
Adapting to Rio Tinto Village
The adjustment wasn't easy for Ersilia. The first few months were a constant test, both physically and mentally: "“At first it was like being catapulted onto another planet,”, tells, "“The oppressive heat, the endless days and life in a tin container are a constant challenge.”. However, Ersilia found a way to cope with these difficulties, developing an inner strength that allowed her to overcome every obstacle. Now, after many months, she can say she feels part of that isolated but vibrant community.

Life in the village
Rio Tinto is not only one of the largest mining companies in the world, but also represents an isolated community in the Australian desert. This mine is surrounded by an inhospitable landscape, with temperatures that can reach 47 degrees Celsius, and a wildlife that includes poisonous spiders. In such a hostile environment, Ersilia found a unique opportunity.
Hired to welcome and assist the residents of the mining village, Ersilia immersed herself in a world of strict rules and hard work. With 12-hour shifts and a “fly in and fly out” system that involves two consecutive work weeks followed by a week off, life in the mine is a constant test of physical and mental endurance.

An international community in an extreme environment
In the village of Rio Tinto, Ersilia is one of the few women in a male-dominated environment. Only 15% of the workforce is female, but this has not stopped her from finding her place and growing internally. With 900 workers from all over the world, the village is an international microcosm, geographically isolated but rich in cultural interactions.
The daily routine in the village is rigorous, but for Ersilia, every day represents a new challenge and an opportunity for personal growth.“"To work here, you have to have integrity," she explains, "otherwise you break down." This experience not only strengthened her spirit, but also gave her a new perspective on life and the value of resilience.
Emotions heightened in the desert
Western Australia, with its arid and isolated landscape, is not only a workplace for Ersilia, but also a theatre where emotions are amplified.“Here, everything feels more intense,” he explains. “If you have traumas or fears, you have to face them here, there’s no way to avoid them.” This extreme environment had a profound impact on her, forcing her to confront her emotions and become stronger.
Ersilia describes this experience as a great opportunity. “You either go crazy or you become strong,” she says. And she, without a doubt, has become strong. Every day spent in the desert is a lesson in determination, preparing her for whatever the future may bring.
An archive of experiences and humanity
“"The desert is a place that helps you understand and explore yourself. It's like an archive, collecting your experiences, your emotions, and when you finally get off the plane to go back somewhere else, that place becomes home.", Ersilia says, "In the desert there is immensity, and in immensity there are ugly and beautiful things." This vastness has allowed her to see humanity more clearly, especially among the miners, exhausted after 12 hours of work.
In the heart of the desert, Ersilia sees people who are both fragile and courageous, individuals who face an immense challenge every day with surprising strength. Thanks to her positive attitude and tremendous energy, she was recognized as the best employee of the month.‘”It’s a feminine energy,“ she says proudly, ”an energy to spare!”
An adventurous dream: the South Pole
Despite the difficulties, Ersilia isn't discouraged. On the contrary, her experience in the Australian desert has ignited in her a desire to take on new challenges. When I ask her what her plans are for the future, her voice breaks with emotion. "The South Pole," she replies without hesitation. His next ambition is an expedition to the frozen wastes of Antarctica, where oil hides beneath layers of ice and temperatures drop to minus 47 degrees.
For many, the thought of facing such hostile climates would be intimidating, but not for this woman. “I don't know fear,”, declares with conviction, “Every new challenge is an opportunity to grow and discover more about myself.”. Her boldness and indomitable spirit push her to explore new horizons, constantly trying to push her limits.
A life in constant evolution
Ersilia Festa's story is a hymn to inner strength and adaptability. From the hills of Irpinia to the arid Australian desert, her journey is a constant exploration of herself and the world. In an age when many seek security and stability, she chooses uncertainty and adventure, turning every challenge into an opportunity for growth.
And as he prepares for his next big venture, His indomitable spirit reminds us that true strength lies not in avoiding difficulties, but in facing them with courage and determination.. His story is a source of inspiration for all of us, an invitation to explore our limits and discover the greatness that lies within us.
