The eastern border was defined by the creation of the former Metropolitan Branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad<\/strong> in 1873, which created a physical barrier that today separates Edgewood from Brookland<\/strong> to the east.<\/p>\n

The Edgewood neighborhood takes its name from the \u201cEdgewood\u201d estate of Salmon P. Chase<\/strong>. Appointed Secretary of the Treasury<\/strong> of the United States by the President Abraham Lincoln,<\/strong> Chase held this office from 1861 to 1864.<\/p>\n

During this time, he purchased part of a 30-acre plot of land called Metropolis View<\/strong>, as well as another 20 acres of land nearby. Here he built an estate at the intersection of 4th and Edgewood Streets NE, completing the property in 1865 and naming it Edgewood.<\/p>\n
